Crescendo is Olla’s proposal for the international design competition for the new Architecture and Design Museum in Helsinki. A total of 624 proposals were submitted by architectural teams from around the world. Crescendo was ranked among the top ten percent in a highly competitive international competition.

The jury particularly praised the proposal’s distinctive concept and striking architectural expression. The idea of massive, stepped terraces that emphasise views towards the sea was considered to be both strong and visually compelling. The carefully considered material palette was seen as a natural complement to the monumentality of the architecture.

Olla’s architectural vision reflects the values of Finnish society, deeply rooted in nature, community and equality. The design draws inspiration from the Finnish landscape, with the building appearing to rise organically from the ground. This rootedness symbolises not only a physical connection to the land, but also stability, strength and a profound respect for nature.

The building serves as a new, active meeting place, connecting the greenery of Tähtitorninmäki Park with the vibrant urban squares of the city. Sculptural and seamlessly integrated into its surroundings, the building brings nature into the urban landscape and encourages interaction between people.

Architecture that rises towards the heights reflects a society that encourages people to dream, pursue their goals and transcend their starting points. At the same time, it opens up new perspectives onto the surrounding city and landscape.

Architecture invites people to rise together with the building, offering new perspectives and experiences of some of Finland’s most significant cultural and natural landmarks.

In addition to a museum, Crescendo has been designed as an open and vibrant public space that remains active throughout the year. A market-square-like, sheltered area is created alongside the building, inviting people to meet and spend time there even without visiting the museum. The space is intended for everyone.

The museum entrance hall is spacious and clearly structured, while multiple entrances make the building easily accessible. The museum spaces are designed to be clear and flexible, allowing for a wide range of exhibitions and uses. The modular structure supports different spatial configurations and enables the building to adapt to changing needs.

The considered use of northern natural light strengthens the connection between interior and exterior while enriching the visitor experience. Nature does not remain outside the building; instead, it permeates the architecture through materials, views, light and the form of the building, rooted in the landscape.
