The substation located between a highway and serene rural landscape reflects the nature of electricity
Vantaa Energy’s new substation in Varisto, Vantaa, started operating in December 2023. The substation significantly enhances the area’s electricity transmission capacity. The architecture of the station not only supports functional needs but also transforms the building into a landmark for the area. At the core of the architectural concept is the creation of electricity when two voltages meet.
Electricity requires the interaction of positive and negative charges. The Varisto substation is situated between the busy Kehä III highway and the calm field expanse – at the intersection of two environments with different characteristics. The result is a place with a strong identity, providing shelter for crucial production equipment while also embodying the nature of electricity itself.
The phenomenon of electricity has also previously fascinated the lead architect of the project, Bratislav Toskovic. The Länsisalmi Power Station designed for Fingrid won its category at the 2018 World Architecture Festival.
In the design process, Toskovic emphasizes the importance of dialogue in addition to a strong concept: the quality of architecture is directly related to the level of conversation. The way ideas and information flow among designers, clients, and implementers is of immense significance.
The same principle applies to the building and its surroundings. The quality of architecture is significantly influenced by how smoothly the building engages in a conversation with its environment.
The Varisto substation establishes a connection between two very different areas. The intersection gives rise not only to a building but also to a new meaningful place.
